For a while, it seemed that breast feeding a baby had become a remote act. Thankfully, we have become more enlightened to the many positive attributes of breastfeeding a child. This has lead to resurgences in its practices over the past 20 years. However, it is also important to point out that there are ways to maximize the benefit of breastfeeding. Since it would be best to make sure the experience is as positive and nurturing as possible, here are a few brief health tips for breastfeeding mothers:

Some Basic Suggestions

Increasing the amount of protein in your diet will prove very helpful. This does not mean you need to start ingesting a number of protein supplements such as the expensive ones sold in health food stores. In reality, all you would need to do is increase your intake of meat, poultry, eggs, and/or beans as these are all high protein foods.

If you are unsure how to breastfeed a child, it is important to learn. Thankfully, many health and community centers offer excellent information and instructions. Taking advantage of what they have to offer is a huge help.

Avoid being nervous when you breastfeed for the first time. Yes, this type of advice is easier said than done, but it is critically important not to be overly nervous or edgy when you breastfeed. This will only add to the discomfort being experienced and make it a chore.

When experiencing painful after effects of breastfeeding, placing ointment on the breasts can prove helpful in terms of reducing bleeding or chaffing. Applying the ointment at night prior to bed would be most helpful.

Remember to support your baby properly when you are breastfeeding. When the baby is not properly held in place, there will be a tendency for the baby to wiggle and slide. This means the mother will have to adjust the baby repeatedly and this can take much the ease out of the process.

It is very important to hold the baby’s head in the right place when breastfeeding. This will ensure the baby’s mouth is properly positioned and placed on the nipple. This will ensure feeding is done properly and with minimal discomfort.

Increasing your water intake during the breastfeeding stage will prove helpful as well. Re-hydrating after nursing your baby will maintain your health and vitality during the process. Also, its of prime importance to imbibe quality beverages such as mil, herbal tea, and fruit juices in your diet.

Conversely, it is important to curtail your intake of caffeine during the breastfeeding period. Caffeine can – and will – dehydrate you. It will also make your more edgy and nervous while breastfeeding and can even make you into a clock watcher who wants the session to end. Needless to say, such an attitude will make breastfeeding little more than a chore.

These are just a few brief tips on how to make breastfeeding a baby easier and more enjoyable. Again, the process is to be joyous and memorable. There is no reason for it to be anything less than that.
